Summary of the course:

(IS 201) Introduction to Information System is one of the courses that could be used to satisfy the Self, Society, and the Modern World (SSMW) domain requirement. This course focuses on the impact of IT on individuals, our community/society and our world at large. The course examines how IT is changing our world view and influences our behaviors.  The course also explores the impact of various IT technologies on our economy, business interactions, and our culture. In addition we examine how Technology affects other aspects of our life such as education, online behavior, gender issues and communications. The course takes a deeper look into how information system is integral into modern organizations and how they use IT to solve business problems. Topics include systems concepts; organizational processes; technological aspects of information systems; the Internet; IT security and ethical issues; database management; and systems development life cycle. In addition, students familiarize themselves with the DePaul computing environment and demonstrate competency at navigating that environment.  After completing this course students should have:

  • A better understanding of the roles of information technologies in today's organization
  • A better understanding of how information technology could be strategic to a business organization.
  • A better understanding of how IT supports organizations' business processes and functions.
