Summary of the course:

Computers are ubiquitous. One cannot travel, do the laundry, cook, or check out a book at the library without using the technology of computing. As a result, computers have had a tremendous impact on our everyday lives. Computing technology has solved many problems, but sometimes these solutions cause even greater problems. The ACM recommends that students “develop the ability to ask serious questions about the social impact of computing and to evaluate proposed answers to the questions.”' This course will introduce students to an overview of social analysis techniques and the theories of social change. These tools will be used to explore social issues in computing. Students will have the option to participate in service learning as a part of this course. After completing this course students and managers should have:

  1. Increase awareness of the impact of computing technology on society.
  2. Develop skills in analyzing social change Improve understanding of cultural differences.
  3. Encourage volunteer action that can make a difference in communities.
