People and Organizations Online (Stage
3) |
Cyber cafés are the main entry point
for Internet access. At an average cost of 100 cedis/minute most users
can afford to use the Internet. The number of cybercafés increased
dramatically from just 40 in 1999 to 250 cyber cafés today.
They generally see an occupancy rate at around 60% , which indicates
there is demand for the services they provide.
The Internet Society Ghana Chapter (ISOG) is a professional membership
society established in Ghana in 1997. With a mission to revolutionize
Ghana's networking system, this chapter is among an international
organization. Its members include individuals, companies, government
agencies, and foundations that are focused in innovating the Internet
technologies of Ghana. This organization provides literature and standards
for internet protocols. There are also a number of other organizations/groups
that provide updated information on internet and other technical developments.
For example, the Ghana Institution of Engineers has a website that
is greatly informative. This website has a number of articles and
forums that serve as a technical knowledge base for those who interested
in improving the technical infrastructure of Ghana in all aspects
possible. |
ICTs in Everyday Life (Stage 3) |
There are a few organizations that try to create
some awareness about the Internet in Ghana, such as Partners for Internet
Education, CEDECOM, and GhaClad. GhaClad is the Ghana Computer Literacy
and Distance Education who provide ICT's for the rural areas. They
serve a large community of seven districts and twenty-two towns. They
provide services such as email, training in MS Office, computer literacy,
typing, and Internet access- all for a fee. This telecenter is powered
by solar energy since there is no electricity in the village.

Locally Relevant Content (Stage 2) |
The majority of the newspapers on the web for
Ghana are 2-3 days obsolete. Online data is treated no differently.
The notion of maintenance of real-time data is not profoundly embedded
in the business society that handles websites.
