Hardware Manufacturing

Programs such as Industry 21 launched in 1999 have contributed to Singapore’s hardware manufacturing. The Singapore Economic Development Board created the plan to develop Singapore’s Industries.  It goals included contributing 40% (25% Manufacturing/15% Service) to the GDP of Singapore.

Jobs in excess of 20,000 jobs (Manufacturing 2/3 skilled workers/ Service 3/4 skilled workers) on average would be created by the initiative. The program has succeeded in several areas [9]:

 

Manufacturing 1999 Performance

  • Fixed Asset Investment (FAI): $8.0 billion
  • Value-added: $5.9 billion
  • New jobs: 13,500
  • Knowledge/Skilled workers: 56%

 

Singapore is a major player in the manufacturing and exporting of electronic semi-conductors.  
Singapore exports $63 billion (1997 est.) in computer equipment and telecommunications equipment. [10]

  • Data Storage companies include DT Systems which is the support arm of Datum Distribution, it distributes data storage products through their network of dealers.  

  • There are many computer companies that currently manufacture personal computers in Singapore including those that are headquartered outside the country. The major manufacturers include Acer, Compaq, Dell and Hewlett-Packard.   

  • The companies that are ISPs’ also provide networking facilities as well. These include Pacific Internet, SCV Broadband Access Services, SingNet, and Star Hub.  

  • There are many computer companies that manufacture peripherals in Singapore including those that are headquartered outside the country. The major manufacturers include Epson, TEC Singapore, Corbell Technology, IBM and Richcom Technology.

  • Singapore Computer Systems Limited (SCS), a IT services provider in the Asia Pacific region, is the IT business arm of the Singapore Technologies Group, a multinational conglomerate whose core businesses are Engineering, Technology, Infrastructure & Logistics, Property and Financial Services. Their key competencies are in IT Consulting, Systems Integration, Outsourcing, Networking, E-Commerce and R&D/Product Development. Other services include design and implementation, business recovery and call center services through systems integration.

·         Xchange21 a subsidiary of Ariba is headquartered in Singapore.  It offers eBusiness consulting and systems integration services for business-to-consumer (B2C), consumer-to-consumer (C2C) and business-to-business (B2B) digital exchanges. The company provides a range of solutions from strategy consulting to implementation support as well as creating custom applications
