IT 399/599- Study Abroad Brazil 2013
In March of 2013, IT 399/599, a class composed of undergraduates and graduate students across IT, liberal
arts and business programs spent nearly ten days in Brazil researching the culture, people and technology
environment of Salvador and Rio de Janeiro. The goal of this research was to familiarize themselves
with the objectives of the upcoming technological park in Bahia and study the various factors, inputs
and conditions related to the potential success of said park - all while keeping in context, the idea of technological clusters. In addition to the academic lessons, the
group learned about traveling to a new country with a unique culture and language - many for the first time.

Salvador
Salvador is located on the northeast coast of Brazil and is the
capital of the state of Bahia. The original capital of Brazil, it is the third most populous city in the nation.
Salvador is unique in Brazil due to its Afro-Brazilian influence combined with the Portuguese colonial architecture.
Its historical center, Pelourinho, was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1985.
Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro city is the capital of Rio de Janeiro state and the second most populated city in Brazil. Rio was the capital of Brazil
for nearly 200 years before losing its status to Brasilia in 1960. Rio is the headquarters of major oil and telephone
companies including Petrobras and Vale. It is the most visited city in the southern hemisphere and home of the
famous Carnival celebrations. Rio will host the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and will be the first South American city to host the Olympic Games in 2016.
