Early Internet Adoption:

The internet was first introduced in Croatia through the CARNet (Croatian Academic and Research Network) which was a nationwide research and education network that aimed to enhance the progress of the nation's individuals and their society through Information Technology.  This project was started by the Croatian Ministry of Science and technology as a project and ultimately developed into its own specialized institution.  In 1994 the first WWW servers were established ultimately leading to the first internet courses for the Croatian people and throughout time this became one of CARNet's most important initiatives.  CARNet was not only the first Internet Service Provider to all citizens of Republic of Croatia

Internet Initiatives in Croatia: (Stage 4)

With the creation on the CARNet system the Croatian government continues to make Information Technology a priority in their legislation.  The government of the Republic of Croatia has developed a central office for IT related functions with an emphasis on developing programs and projects for widespread use of the internet in the region.  This includes having broadband internet access available for public administration and its citizens when interacting with the administration.  In addition the organization is enhancing the security of their networks to encourage businesses and citizens to utilize the internet.  This includes a safe haven for personal data and private business transactions.  In the year 2007 the Croatian government created an initiative to rollout broadband internet to the entire region.  This plan included developing new broadband technologies, stimulating the development of electronic business activities, reducing the digital divide and establishment of conditions for equal participation, and consistent monitoring and evaluation of the network.

Croatia's Telecommunication environment: (Stage 4)
