LNCC Labratory: Petropolis, Brazil |
|
Description
The Laboratorio Nacional de Computacão Científica (LNCC) exists to
stimulate research and education in the area of advanced computing in
the country of Brazil. Created in Rio de Janeiro by the National
Advisory for Scientific and Technological Development in May of 1980;
The LNCC has developed a pioneering role in Brazilian science mainly in
the areas of applied and computational mathematics, computational
mechanics (solid and fluid), and theory of systems and control.
LNCC, now in the former imperial capital of Petrópolis, is a research
unit whose purpose is to act as a center of reference and diffusion for
scientific computation in Brazil. This is achieved through the
maintenance of a high performance computational environment that is
accessible to the national scientific and technological community of
Brazil.
Since its foundation, LNCC has been involved in excellent projects of
research, development, and education of human resources. Beyond this,
the researchers at LNCC have collaborated federal universities in the
guidance and creation of 90 doctoral theses in its 21 years of
existence.
The purpose of the LNCC is the following:
- To carry through research and development in the
diverse fields of computer science; especially the creation of
computational methods and mathematical models to advance the cause
of science and technology.
- To promote the advancement of human resources in
the fields of computer science through courses, conferences,
seminars, workshops and publications.
- To promote the exchange of ideas, technology,
and relevant staff among national and international universities as
well as government funded national laboratories.
- To develop, install, and manage high performance
computing resources; in collaboration with its partners in the
scientific, technology, and entrepreneurial community.
- To influence and coordinate the activities of
the National System of High Performance Processing (SINPAD) and the
National Bio-informatics Laboratory.
- To maintain a comprehensive library of computer
programming tools and utilities, and provide assistance in their
use.
- To celebrate agreements or contracts with other
institutions with regards to joint projects of research,
educational, and of scientific development.
- To collaborate with programs of support in the
development of science and technology, particularly those promoting
research.
- To promote technology partnerships with small
business, aiming to develop incubators of technology, with the
objective of developing new enterprises and transfers of
technologies.
- To develop, produce and, commercialize products
of its research while
