According to the results of ICT Usage Survey on Households and Individuals carried out in April 2009, 30% of households have access to the Internet at home. ADSL is the most widely used Internet connection type with 85.6 % in Turkey.



Proportions of computer and Internet use of individuals are 40,1 per cent and 38,1 per cent, respectively According to the results of ICT Usage Survey on Households and Individuals while proportions of the male that use computer and Internet were 50.5 % and 48.6%, these proportions were 30.0 % and 28.0 % in female , respectively. When individuals were asked time of the last use of the computer and the Internet, 35.6 % of the individuals in 16-74 age group has used computer and 34.0 % of the individuals has used Internet in the period of January-March 2009. While 61.2 %of the individuals use computer every day, this proportion were 59,3 % in the usage of the Internet. The location of use for individuals using a computer in the same period was chiefly at home (65.1%), while 32.0 % used a computer in the workplace, 21.1 % at Internet cafe, these proportions were 57.6 % at home, 32.4 % in the work place, 24.1 % at Internet cafe for the location of Internet usage.

The highest proportion of computer and Internet usage was at 16-24 age groups. For all age groups, proportions of computer and Internet usage for males were higher than females. Much of this heavy engagement is driven by usage of social networking and entertainment media sites, which maintain users attention for extended periods of time. When computer and Internet usage are ordered by education level, individuals graduated from higher education use computer and Internet at the highest level

As for the Internet usage level in Turkey it is lower than the EU average. Thus, Turkey occupies the seventh position among Internet top 10 European countries, having 26,500,000 subscribers as of March 2009, overtaking Poland, Netherlands and Romania, while Germany, UK and France grab first, second and third places, respectively.

As for the Internet penetration it marks significant growth of 1,225.0 %, rising from 2,000,000 ( or 2.9%) in 2000 to 26,500,000 ( 34.5%) in 2009. However, Turkey still has just 6.6% of European total market share.

The Internet is widely used by all members of society in the turkey. It is use by individual users, schools, businesses and government. The Internet provides news, email, instant messaging services to the turkey population. There is also a strong cellular network in place to provide cell phone service to all urban areas. The turkey is the leading provider of cellular phone service in the Arabian Gulf.

While proportions of the enterprises that use computer and have Internet access were 88.7 % and 85.4 % in January 2007, these proportions were 90.6 % and 89.2 % in January 2008, respectively. Proportion of enterprises that have Web Page was 63.1 % in January 2007 and 62.4 % in January 2008.
