IT 599 - Study Abroad Brazil 2012

In March of 2012, IT 599, a class composed of undergrads and graduate students across IT, liberal arts and business programs spent ten days in Brazil researching the culture, people and technology environment in Salvador and Rio de Janeiro. The goal of this research was to familiarize ourselves with the objectives of the upcoming technological park in Bahia and study the various factors, inputs and conditions related to the potential success of said park. In addition to the academic lessons, the group learned about traveling to a new country with a unique culture and language - some for the first time.

Salvador

Salvador is located on the northeast coast of Brazil and is the capital of the state of Bahia. The original capital of Brazil, it is the third most populous city in Brazil. Salvador is unique in Brazil with its Afro-Brazilian influence combined with the Portuguese colonial architecture. Its historical center, Pelourinho, was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1985.

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro city is the capital of Rio de Janeiro state and the second most populated city in Brazil. Rio was the capital of Brazil for nearly 200 years before losing its status to Brasilia in 1960. Rio is the headquarters of major oil and telephone companies including Petrobras and Vale. It is the most visited city in the southern hemisphere and home of the most famous Carnival celebrations. Rio will be the first South American city to host the Olympic Games in 2016.
