 Summary

The Netherlands is ranked 9th in the world on the 2009-2010 Global Information Technology Report published by the World Economic Forum and INSEAD.

The report features the Network Readiness Index (NRI) that ranks 133 economies by examining the correlation between ICT readiness and economic growth. This report examines how prepared countries use ICT effectively on three dimensions: the general business, regulatory and infrastructure. The key stakeholders in this evaluation are individuals, businesses and governments that use and benefit from ICT and the actual usage of the latest information and communications technologies available.

Also, the Netherlands is ranked third in global e-readiness. This is reflected in the annual list of the Economist Intelligence Unit and IBM. The research shows a clear upward trend of the Dutch competitive position since 2001. E-Readiness is the ability to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to develop their economy and to foster their welfare.

In the Global Enabling Trade Report for 2010, the Netherlands is ranked 10th. This is based on their Border administration and the quality and availability of transport and logistics services as their strongest aspects. Their customs offers the necessary services to business (5th) and importing and exporting goods is hassle-free and swift (11th on the efficiency of import-export procedures), while transport services are assessed as the 2nd best in the world in terms of availability and quality. The connectivity with the rest of the world via maritime routs is among the best 3rd), which is not surprising given that the country hosts Europe’s main maritime gateway, the Port o Rotterdam. Quality of port infrastructure is assessed as among the world’s best (3rd). The regulatory environment and physical security is not as good. Rules and regulations for hiring foreign labor s 42nd and protection from common crime and violence is 54th.

The Global Competitiveness Report 2010-2011 by the World Economic Forum has the The Netherlands ranked in 8th place. They say that Dutch businesses are highly sophisticated (ranked 5th) and are among the most aggressive internationally in absorbing new technologies for productivity enhancements (ranked 3rd for their technological readiness). They have an excellent education system (ranked 8th) and efficient factor markets, especially goods markets (8th) and are highly supportive of business activity. They are considered a stable macroeconomic environment.
