Course Topics

The course topics include

  1. Inference for distributions: inference for a population mean, comparing two population means using paired or independent samples, checking normal assumptions.

  2. Multiple regression and correlation, analysis of residuals.

  3. One-way and two-way analysis of variance.

Students apply the statistical methods to the analysis of real data sets using the statistical package SAS.  The statistical software SAS runs on UNIX (accounts are available for students) and on PC's. Click here for more information on how to access SAS.

The objectives of this course are:

bullet

to teach students to perform simple data analyses using SAS and to interpret the output of their analysis;

bullet

to enable students to be informed and critical readers of quantitative arguments,

bullet

to appreciate the role of statistics in empirical research and scientific study,

bullet

and to gain flexible problem-solving skills applicable to unfamiliar statistical settings.

Students are most welcome to speak to the instructor about any aspect of the course. Feedback from you is important. The best way to contact me is via electronic mail, but you may also see me during office hours or by appointment at any other times.
