ACIF’s particular focus on becoming Brazil's technology powerhouse has created such systems as the UV detectors on the beaches, in-car breathalyzers that disable car engines, electronic voting machines and various social gaming technologies.  Today Florianopolis has about 550 Tech Companies.  In 2008, earnings in both hardware and software topped and one billion.  By third quarter 2009, earnings were one billion in just the software companies alone.  IT services made as much as construction, tourism and health combined - five times more than construction and eight times more than tourism.  This shows real growth and interest by ACIF and the community in their commitment to technology investments and research.

The technology arm of ACIF is an organization called the Association of Computing and Technology Education (ACATE).  ACATE is the technology powerhouse which interfaces with city, state, federal government and connects with them in technology for grants, research, and financial services.   ACATE was their first technology incubator that started with 40 companies located in Alfa Park. We were introduced to the organization and its history by the Director of ACATE Bernado Meyers - who was also the local guide for our trip.  We were also given more information about ACATE regarding its current and future involvement in the community by Rodrigo Sossio- Technology Journalist and Community Press Manager of ACATE.

Today about 250 enterprises associated with ACATE with about 5000 direct employees.   Increased salaries in the Information Technology field are among the biggest incentives for the increased involvement.  Their initiatives are further supported by the government which is very involved in tracking progress for startup companies and has created programs for technology education (e.g. government loans are interest free).

The future of technology in Florianopolis lies in a huge project called “Sapiens Park”.   The vision is a center where art, science and technology are combined.  Its focus is on education and training with additional focus in EPA standards and community development.  The project is slated for completion in 2020.
