Assignment 2 -
Panel Briefing on Core Knowledge Topic Reading (Individual)

Due   See Weekly Topics
Purpose  This assignment produces a summary of a reading found on the Internet that explains a topic covered in this course in greater detail.  The goal is to give someone reading the completed panel briefing a road map of the source reading, so more detail on some aspect of the reading is wanted, it can easily be found it in the original.
Topic

Because the Core Knowledge Exam now occurs right after the end of the quarter, each student signs up for one of the topics listed in the  Core Knowledge Study Guide.  The student:
 picks the topic,
signs up for that topic on the COL Discussion Forum and then
starts searching the web for appropriate source documents the resulting schedule
appears on the COL Discussion Forum.

ALL ARTICLES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR SELECTION THAT:
COVER THE SELECTED TOPIC AND ARE
    EITHER FOUND ON THE INTERNET
OR ON THE DEPAUL LIBRARY DATABASES
EXCEPT FOR THOSE ARTICLES THAT MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

  • THE ARTICLE IS ALREADY --
    • A COURSE REQUIRED READING
    • A COURSE RECOMMENDED READING
    • CITED IN THE LECTURE NOTES
    • WAS PART OF AN EXEMPLAR
    • SELECTED BY ANOTHER IS 483 STUDENT WHO HAS ALREADY 'RESERVED' IT
      ON THE COL DISCUSSION FORUM.

The students prepares a briefing paper on the topic from either one long reading (at least 4 pages) or from two (2) readings found on the web whose total is at least 4 pages,
-. See below.

THE COMPLETED PANEL BRIEFING CHARACTERISTICS:

  •   This briefing paper is two pages long for each short reading selected (2 to3 pages for the selected reading), or
longer for the double reading (where it is longer than 4 pages).
  • . For each article on which a briefing is done, the order is:
    • an executive summary paragraph which is
      • written by the student
    • a topical outline (or road map) that accurately reflects the
      • organization of the article with exactly
        • the Same Headings as in the article or
the First Five Words in the section's first paragraph when there are no headings in the article
        • the same order of the article
      • summaries of each section under its heading which is:
        • accurate
        • concise
        • thorough as to major concepts in the section.
        • can be short sentences or clauses
    • a copy of the article and its web address
      • to get the copy of the article
-- once article is appearing in Internet Explorer,
        • Select All -- CTL- A
        • Then Copy -- CTL-C
        • Then switch to MS Word at the end of the paper then
          Paste -- CTL V.
      • if the web address cannot be reached without going through a number of steps -- clearly state the steps involved.

Therefore, the assignment that consists of at least two readings which are separately described in a two to three page descriptor, gives a final page count of 4 to 6 pages plus the copies of the articles on which the panel is based excluding the copies of the readings.

The briefing paper is done in MS Word with the reference to the source clearly noted.
See the exemplar.

This panel briefing gives more detailed information than the topic's lecture.  It is not meant to repeat the lecture material.

Students signing up for the same topic, serve on a panel together.   To make sure that there are no duplicates, these students may choose:
1)  to divide up their topic into smaller sub-segments which each student covers separately, or
2)  they can cover all the same topics but always with different readings

IT IS EACH STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THAT THE READING SELECTED IS NOT SELECTED BY A CLASSMATE.
Students must check with any student covering the same topic.  This is done by checking the Discussion Forum for Panel Briefing Topics on Course On Line (COL).

The completed assignment 2 paper will look like:
