Assignment 1 -
Analysis of a Leader's Effectiveness (Individual)

Due Week 3 (Paper)  See  Exemplar #1  Exemplar #2
Topic Analysis of a Leader's Effectiveness
The student analyzes a personally familiar manager or project leader in an IS organization.  To do this, the following steps are taken.

First analyze the nature of the people who are being lead and the nature of the work they do.

Determine the style-situation fit, and the effectiveness of its leader based on the Flamholtz Leadership Effectiveness framework.
If you are unfamiliar with an IS organization then choose a leader who is not in IS with which you are familiar.   If you are unfamiliar with any leaders in a workplace then the Sturdivant case is used.
Process -- Select someone whose leadership behavior is interesting to you (Selected Leader).

-- Look at an area that this selected leader runs.  For example, an IS manager can run one group (Selected Area) which can have several sub-areas that are very different.  (A mainframe computer room operation is very different from a department devoted to designing and developing web pages.) If there are more than 2 sub-areas, then select the one that is the most familiar sub-area for the report.

-- (See assignment 1 template for detailed instructions on items analyzed and the format of the paper)

-- Analyze the organizational characteristics for each selected sub-area that the Selected Leader runs.

-- Analyze the dominant tasks that the Selected Leader performs for each selected sub-area and the style that the Selected Leader uses in performing these dominant tasks.

-- During all of the above phases build the reference section for the paper (see below) when you have specific written documentation that is important for your analysis.  For example, there exists a web news article that clarifies the situational factors or the Selected Leader's behaviors, then adding such information to the reference section is desirable.  It is not mandatory to have references on written material when none exists.  For this assignment, most of your experiences will be personal recollections which require no references.  However if you interview other people who are familiar with the leader's behavior then that interview needs a reference entry.
