Purpose

The main purpose of ISAMA/CTI 2004 is to bring together persons interested in relating mathematics with the arts and architecture. This includes teachers, architects, artists, mathematicians, scientists, and engineers. As in previous conferences, the objective is to share information and discuss common interests. We have seen that new ideas and partnerships emerge which can enrich interdisciplinary education. In particular, we believe it is important to begin interdisciplinary education at an early age so one component of ISAMA/CTI 2004 will be teacher workshops for K-12  in addition to college level courses.

For ISAMA information, see http://www.isama.org/. In particular, the Directory has links to works in a variety of fields.

Fields of Interest

ISAMA/CTI 2004 will focus on the following fields related to mathematics: Architecture, Computer Design and Fabrication in the Arts and Architecture, Geometric Art, Sculpture, Music, Dance, Mathematical Visualization, Tesselations and Tilings, and Origami. These fields include graphics interaction, CAD systems, algorithms, fractals, and graphics within mathematical software (Maple, Mathematica, etc.). There will also be associated teacher workshops.

Call For Papers

There will be a Conference Proceedings. However, due to the anticipated large number of participants, papers should be from two to four pages.  The format for papers is the same as for ISAMA/BRIDGES 2003. In particular, below the title include your mailing and email addresses followed by a preface. The deadline for papers is March, 15,  2004.

Papers may include images. For more complete consideration of their work, artists may also wish to submit up to ten visual images in the form of slides, CD or e-mail .jpeg images. Include SASE for return of slides or CD. Papers should be submitted to Nat Friedman, Dept. of Mathematics, Univ. at Albany-SUNY, 1400 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY 12222. We recommend early submission to guarantee consideration for inclusion in the schedule of speakers.  Talks will be 20 minutes with 5 minutes for discussion. Speakers may wish to give their presentation in the form of slides, power point, audio and/or video. We encourage primarily visual and/or audio presentations, with many images and clips.  We also discourage reading papers during a presentation.

Schedule, Fees, and Excursions

Teacher workshops will be held June 15 and 16. The total fee for the teacher workshops is $100. The talks will be held June 17, 18 and 19 with evening excursions. Before May 1, 2004, the total fee for June 17 -19 is $250 including excursions and the Proceedings. There is a combined fee of $300 for June 15-19. After May 1 the fees will rise to $300 and $350 respectively. (To registration form)

We are planning excursions that will include an Architecture Tour Boat Trip on the Chicago River as well as an Architecture Bus Tour. There are also many excellent museums in Chicago including the Art Institute that is around the corner from the conference sight at CTI-DePaul located in downtown Chicago. The Museum of Contemporary Art and the Terra Museum of American Art are both within a few blocks of the Inn of Chicago. The new Frank Gehry complex is under construction and is within easy walking distance of CTI, as are many outdoor sculptures. Other nearby exhibit venues are the Chicago Cultural Center and the State of Illinois Gallery. The Archicenter, which features architectural exhibits related to the city, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are next door to the conference site. Registrants will receive a packet showing the many points of interest in Chicago. We recommend extending your stay in order to enjoy the sights.
