- Mar 16. The questions and answers for all of the closed quizzes are not posted.
- Mar 14. There will be one problem on the Proctored Final Exam related to regular expressions. In the class notes for today, Mar 14, check out the section Regular Expressions
- Mar 9. Reminder: Practice Quiz 7b closes tomorrow (Sunday, Mar 10). Practice 8a closes on Friday, Mar 15, earlier than usual because the first time slots to take the Proctored Final Exam are on Saturday, Mar 16.
- Mar 4. For Exercise 1, Elements Example, the reason that the font settings didn't
work in the stylesheet was that the line
font: %100, verdana sans-serif;
should have beenfont: %100 verdana, sans-serif;
- Feb 26. The Final Exam Review Guide is posted. The final version of this review guide will be posted later this week.
- Feb 22. The Magic8Ball Example didn't work in class today because the JSON file name was spelled wrong. It should have been spelled predictions.json but it was spelled predictions.js. (How embarassing!) With that fix, the project works well. The directions and source code files are posted for Exercise 5. The the directions and source code files for Exercise 6 are also posted.
- Feb 15. The Scaled Midterm Scores are posted on D2L.
- Feb 12. Project 1 is due on Wednesday, Feb 14. This project will not be counted late if submitted by Saturday, Feb 17. Only submit Tutorial 3 if you need help getting it to work.
- Feb 12. The scores for Tutorial 2b were erroneously posted for Tutorial 2c. The Tutorial 2b and 2c scores are now posted correctly.
- Feb 9. The dropbox for the Midterm Exam -- Short Essay Part is posted on D2L. It is due on Sunday night. Also, the Midterm Exam -- Multiple Choice part is open as a D2L quiz. It closes Sunday night at 11:59pm.
- Feb 8. The Multiple Choice part of the midterm exam will open today at 2:00pm. Here are the questions for the Short Essay part of the midterm exam.
- Jan 29. The Midterm Exam will open on Thursday, Feb 8, and close on Sunday, Feb 14, at 11:59pm. There will be two parts to this midterm: (A) a D2L Multiple Choice part consisting of 15 questions and (B) a Short Essay part, consisting of two short essay questions.
- Jan 29. There will be no practice quizzes during Week 5: Feb 6 and 8.
- Jan 29. Registration is open for the Proctored Final Exam. You will take this exam in the Course Online Proctoring Center on the 2nd floor in the the Jarvis CDM Building, 243 S. Wabash Ave. The final will be open from Saturday, March 16 to Thursday, March 21, although the proctoring center is not open on Sunday. Find the Final Exam registration site on the D2L Homepage for IT 313, lower right corner.
- Jan 22. Tutorial 2b is due this week on Wednesday, Jan 24. Also, except the the week of the midterm, two quizzes are due each week: one on Sunday night and one on Thursday night.
- Jan 21. If you are in the async section of IT 231, your study log for Week 2 is due tomorrow. Study logs are due each Monday for the preceding week to obtain credit for attendance. See Announcement January 9g on the Announcements page of the class website for details.
- Jan 20. The scores are posted for Tutorial 1. Here are some comments:
- Source code comments are required in all source code files (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). For Tutorial 1, if source code comments are missing, the deduction is only 5 points. For future projects, the deduction for no source code comments will be 10 points.
- Source code headers containing your name, project number, and submit date are required for all source code files (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). For Tutorial 1, if source code headers are missing, the deduction is only 3 points. For future tutorials and projects, the deduction will be 5 points.
- The project folder for Tutorial1 should be named Tutorial1Smith or tutorial1-smith (replace Smith with your last name); the folder should be zipped to produce the zipfile Tutorial1Smith.zip or tutorial1-smith.zip. For Tutorial1, the deduction is 3 points for a bad folder or zip file name. For future projects, the deduction will be 5 points.
- Jan 19. Practice Quiz 1b is due on this coming Sunday, Jan 22. If you have not already done so, please complete your three attempts for this practice quiz by then.
- Jan 18. The Zoom class recording for today will be posted later this afternoon. Jan 15. Items that are due this week:
- AttendenceVerification Document. Due tomorrow, Jan 16. If you did not attend class via Zoom last week, submit this document to avoid being reported as a no-show.
- Study Log for Week 1. Due today, Jan 15. For async students. See announcement Jan 9 g on this page for details. Your Week 1 Study Log will not be counted late this week if submitted by Thursday, Jan 18. Study logs are normally due each Monday for the preceding week.
- Tutorial 1. Due Wednesday, Jan 17. We completed Tutorial 1 in class last week on Thursday, Jan 11.
- Syllabus Quiz. Due Thursday, Jan 18. You are allowed up to three attempts.
- Practice Quiz 1b. Due Sunday, Jan 21. You are allowed up to three attempts for practice quizzes; these quizzes cannot be taken late.
- Jan 14. Each quarter, the university asks course instructors to submit a
list of no-shows for their courses. In order not to be reported as a no-show,
if you an async student, please submit a document to the AttendanceVerification
dropbox stating that you wish to remain in the class. If you are a sync student
that has attended the class via Zoom at least once, you don't need to submit
the document -- I will take you off of the no-show list. If you do not intend
to remain in the class, please drop by Friday, Jan 19.
- Jan 11. The StudyLogs dropbox is posted. If you are in the async section, submit a study logs are due each week on Monday to obtain credit for attendance in the preceding week. The first study log is due on Monday, Jan 15.
- Jan 9 a. The first class meeting of IT 231, Sections 401 (sync) and 410 (async), is on Thursday, Sep 7, in the computer lab CDM 819, at 11:50am. This class meets via Zoom only. Students in the async section are welcome to class meetings via Zoom when possible. Zoom recordings will be available.

https://code.visualstudio.com/download, if you don't already have it installed. We will use the VS Code to create and edit HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files for this class. - Jan 9 e. D2L practice quizzes count 10% of your course score. Students in the synchronous section will take the quizzes in class. Asynchronous students will have ten days after the quiz is taken in class to take the quiz. The first practice quiz is a syllabus quiz, which you take outside of class.
- Jan 9 f. The late penalty for class projects is 10% per day. Exceptions to this late penalty require documentation and an in-person, phone, or Zoom meeting with the instructor. Even if an exception is made, the late penalty may be reduced, but not entirely eliminated.
- Jan 9 g. Students in the synchronous section (Section 401) obtain credit for attendance by attending class in person or via Zoom. Students in the asynchronous section obtain attendance credit by submitting weekly study logs. Although exactly what you submit is up to you, here are some suggestions: the number of hours you spent studying for the various parts of the class (e.g., watching lectures and studying class examples, working on tutorials, projects, and practice quizzes), what did you find interesting, hard, or confusing, what questions did you have? If you have questions for the instructor, email him directly, in addition to putting these questions in the study log.
- Jan 9 h. The deadline to drop this course with full tuition refund: Tuesday, Sep 19, 11:59 pm. No exceptions or appeals are allowed.
- Jan 9 i. Set the Microsoft Explorer on your Windows PC to show file extensions:
Invoke the File Explorer by selecting Start, All Programs, Accessories, and Windows Explorer.
From the File Explorer, select the main menu item Tools, check the box File name extensions
Mac and Unix do not have official file extensions. They are part of the filename.
