Using MS Paint to Resize an Image

• Why avoid large images?
  1. Large images take up too much space in your students.depaul.edu account.

  2. Large images load slowly in the browser.

• An ideal size for an image is about 25K.

• Check the properties of the image file to see how large the image is.

• Don't resize the original image, resize a copy.

• To resize the image copy:
  1. Right click on the image file in the File Explorer, select Open With, Paint.

  2. Select main menu item Image, Stretch/Skew ... Change the Horizontal and Vertical percentages to a percentage less than 100. Keep the percentages equal to preserve the aspect ratio.

  3. Select the main menu item File >> Save As to save the resized image.

Using MS Paint to Crop an Image

• Cropping an image means to select a rectangular region to use.

• To crop an image:
  1. Right click on the image file in the File Explorer, select Open With, Paint.

  2. Right click on the Select item in the toolbar.

  3. Depress the left mouse button at the upper left corner of the rectangular region you wish to select.

  4. Holding the mouse down, move the mouse to the lower left corner of the rectangluar region. Lift the mouse button.

  5. Depress the left mouse button in the rectangular region and drag the rectangle to that the upper left corner of the rectangle coincides with the upper left corner of the MS Paint image region. Lift the mouse button.

  6. Click in the image outside of the selected rectangular region. The blue square resizing handles should be visible on the border of the image.

  7. Depress the left mouse on the lower right resizing handle.

  8. Drag the lower left corner of the image so that it coincides with the selected rectangular region.

  9. Select the main menu item File >> Save As to save the cropped image.
