The main results of this paper include the presentation of a general retrieval model, the definition of the vector space retrieval model with dot product and the semantic network model with spreading activation using this general model, and a proof that semantic networks with spreading activation and vector spaces with dot product are equivalent under ranked retrieval. The notation introduced for the general retrieval model should provide a framework for future work in the area.
