CSC 426 is a course primarily intended to prepare students for
doing research in computing or related areas. It is a required course for all
PhD students in Computer and Information Sciences, but also useful for Masters
degree students who are involved in research projects and may be interested in
pursuing a PhD in the future. The course will help students to learn how to
develop a research proposal, understand the process of doing research, write a
dissertation or thesis, etc., as well as help them prepare for future research
career as a computer professional or an academic. Throughout this course we will try to answer the following questions:
- What is research and what it means to have a PhD?
- What are different types of research methodologies and how are they used?
- How to evaluate or review technical research papers?
- How to write publishable research papers?
- How to develop a research proposal and a research agenda?
- What are the ethical issues in scientific research and professional
responsibility?
