IT 398/599 Topics in Global IT -- CDM Japan 2013
Assignment #2
(Due: 10/4 (Fri), 10/18 (Fri), 11/8 (Fri))
Overview:
This assignment consists of two parts:
- Research paper -- background research on a topic of your interest on
Japanese videogames, anime/animation or other content/media (e.g. art, manga); written from objective point of
view. 3 pages minimum.
- Self-reflection -- your motivation for choosing the topic;
written from subjective point of view. 1 page minimum.
Research paper is an individual paper, in a sense that everyone writes on
the topic of his/her interest. But if several students expressed interest
in similar topics, those topics may be combined into a larger topic, and the
students will be instructed to write a group paper (but each person must satisfy
the requirement (3 pages minimum)). See below for suggested topics.
Self-reflection should describe your comments/reactions on what you found
during research. You can also describe your personal experiences on the
topic issue, starting from how you got interested in the issue, to how the
findings by this research affected (or may affect) your views on the issue.
Specifics:
You will write the paper in four steps, with staggered due dates. You must keep the due date for each step. Late submissions will be
penalized.
Step 1: Topic proposal -- due 10/4 (Fri)
Choose 3 -5 topics which you are interested in (and submit them by the
due date). Then you will discuss with the faculty to decide on _the_ one to
write (until the faculty approves).
Step 2: First draft -- due 10/18 (Fri)
A rough draft of the paper. It should minimally have the overall
structure of the paper (i.e, sections) in place, and each section is filled
with notes (on what to write; these could be in the form of a bullet list).
Step 3: Paper presentation -- 11/1 (Fri)
You make a presentation of your paper during the 11/1 (Fri) meeting.
The paper itself does not have to be finalized by this date. You
present to the class the topic you are writing and the finding you have made
so far.
Step 4: Final paper and Self-reflection -- due 11/8 (Fri)
Submit the final research paper and the self-reflection paper.
Paper specifications:
- All documents in this assignment must be written single spaced and
using a maximum of 12-point font (of any typeface).
- Page margins should be no more than 1 inch all the way around (i.e., top/bottom/left/right).
- The required number of pages is a minimum, meaning that each page
up to and including the last page of the minimum requirement must be full.
(So "3 pages minimum" means you have to have 3 full pages (i.e., the first
three pages are full)).
- Also a 'page' counts only the text portion and does not include a cover/title page
(if you put one) or figures/pictures or references/bibliographies placed in a
page. You can of course insert pictures and figures in a page (in
fact, it's recommended). But if you do, write text more to make up for
the space used by the figures to make the minimum page requirement.
Research Paper:
Research paper must be objective, in particular,
- Avoid statements which express your personal opinions or reactions.
- Describe (or even quote) opinions or statements made by industry people
(e.g. well-known game developers, anime directors). Try to get multiple
views on a given subject (e.g. "On such-and-such aspect, one person is
saying this, while another person is saying that.")
- Include relevant statistics (IMPORTANT!), such as
"2012 Game Publisher Ranking" (of the 2012 releases; by Metacritic).
Also if all possible, obtain data for the U.S. and Japan for the same
statistic so that you can compare the two countries. Use graphs, charts,
tables etc. in the paper effectively to present the statistics.
For your reference, here are some recent statistics:
"Statistics and
Facts about Video Games",
"Essential Facts
About the Computer and Video Game Industry" for games, and
"2005-2012 Seasonal Anime Statistics",
"Anime Sales in
Japan 2012" for anime.
Introductory Reading Materials:
Here are links to some online articles which provide good introduction to
Japanese games and anime. Although some of them are a bit dated (e.g.
from 2007) and/or 'stereotyping' in opinions, the content still seems to
hold true today.
Everyone, regardless
of the major (Gaming/Animation),
MUST read ALL these articles to get the basic understanding of the
Japanese games and anime.
Following articles and videos are materials
STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for
students in the respective major (Game or Animation).
And some more (moderately suggested).
Suggested Topics:
- Gaming-related
- Characteristics of Japanese games
Comparison between Western games and Japanese games. Differences
in game design, also development processes.
- Developing games for global market
Japan has been trying to develop games for global/overseas market.
There are several significant issues in the vein, including:
- Localization
-- changing the content of the games for different languages,
cultures, religions, etc. of the target countries or regions.
- Product design -- export "Japanese contents", or create games
which have an appeal in the target market (or both)?
- Piracy and copy-rights issues
In addition to describing those issues, you can also write about the
effects and 'ramifications' of the content change as evidenced by specific
examples.
- Online games
Online games have been growing rapidly all over the world. In
particular, East Asia (Japan, China and South Korea) is one of the
fastest growing regions of online games. Do a research on the market
trends, products, user tendencies, country-specific regulations, current
issues, etc. with a particular focus on Japan. You can also
include arcade machines in this topic.
- Mobile and Social games
Mobile games --
"Japanese Mobile Game Market Outperforms Video Game
Market".
Social games -- especially Mobile Social games in recent years --
GungHo,
GREE, Mobage
(another link, with
DeNA) -- Social problem
"Japan’s Social Game Industry Shifts Gears After Government Crackdown"
- Other game-related topics
- Arcade games
- Demographics of gamers -- Do women play games in Japan? Kids?
Senior people? Also, what kind of games do they play (as compared
to the games played by American women/kids/senior people)?
- Animation-related
- Characteristics of Japanese anime
Japanese anime has distinct artistic styles and deep storylines. Also
in Japan, anime is made for people of all ages (not just for children).
Do an extensive research on the characteristic of Japanese anime on
various aspects, for example:
- characteristics of the art
- characteristics of the animation methods and techniques
- popular themes/genres (e.g. mecha, sci-fi)
- contents -- Does anime contain too much sex or violence?
- Business models of Japanese anime
In Japan, anime is a huge business, and it cuts across media -- Many
anime is based on manga. TV anime programs are first broadcasted, then
made into DVD's. Additionally, feature-length films are made on a
regular basis. Theme songs are made into music CD's. Games are created
from anime. Toys and goods are made from anime characters. Anime is
used even on pachinko machines (no joke!!) TV commercials feature anime
characters... etc. etc. Those media contents are exported to other
countries as well.
What are the revenue sources of Japanese anime companies? How is the
sales "distributed" among the entities involved? How does the
copy-right/licensing work in this industry (which is called the
"Contents Industry" in Japan, encompassing manga, anime, games, movies,
music and books/magazines)?
- Various issues in Japanese anime
There are a number of issues which the Japanese anime industry is
facing, for example,
- Market saturation (and low quality products)
- Localization (especially content edits)
- Illegal downloads, Fansub
- Piracy
Submission:
Submit Step 2-4 (First draft, Presentation, Final paper) on COL.
Each step has a separate bin, so submit in a respectable one.
