Tips and Links for Posting Web Pages
- A USB Flash Drive is highly recommended for saving your exercises
and projects (512 MB is more than enough). Other names for a Flash
Drive are a memory stick, jump drive or thumb drive. Always keep a
backup of your projects!
- Student
web accounts need to be activated. It is now recommended to
submit a case requesting account activation:
- Login to campus connect
- On the upper-right navigation bar, click on Technology Support Center (TSC)
- Click on "Request Help - Submit a Case" near the bottom of the page
- Fill out the form requesting an account on students.depaul.edu. For case type, select "Enhancement/Request". Leave the category blank. The problem summary should say "Request account on students.depaul.edu". For problem details, indicate that the request is for IT 130.
- For immediate help on web accounts, ID services can activate
accounts. TSC can bey contacted by phone: 312-362-8765.
- File transfer software for Windows PC is now available as WinSCP. Select top WinSCP
Installation Package for most stable version. For the Macintosh,
Fugu is available.
- For this class, I recommend jEdit, which
is available for PCs and Macs. PSPad is another editor for creating web pages. You can download the PSPad installer program here.
- While you can use any Web browser, I
recommend Google Chrome,
which provides the most help in finding problems with your web page.
Firefox is also a good browser for web projects.
- Make sure that your Microsoft File Explorer is set to show
file extensions:
- You can invoke the MS File Explorer by selecting Start,
All Programs, Accessories, and Windows Explorer.
- From the MS File Explorer, select Tools,
Folder Options.... Select the View tab and
uncheck the box for "Hide extensions for known file types".
- Here are some recommendations for developing your own web pages:
- Create and test your pages as files on your computer before you
transfer them to the web server.
- Choose file names that do not have any spaces or fancy characters.
- Either use all lower case letters for file names, or be consistent
with the case of your file names. Some web servers are case
sensitive!
