HCI 440: Usability Engineering

Fall 2004

Individual Assignment

Competitive Analysis

Due Thursday September 23

Overview

For this assignment, you will investigate existing Web applications and other products that address the root concept of the course project.

Application

Find a Web site or product that addresses the root concept. Think of where people go when they are in need of a consumer service. Alternatively, do some Web research and look for service recommendation sites. Once you have identified one Web site or product, provide a link or reference and create a one-paragraph description of it.

Functional properties

List what functions (or tasks) your product provides for its users. Focus on what the functions are, not how they are accomplished. This list will be useful for creating a list of candidate functions for the product you will design.

Scenarios

Provide one common scenario when this product would be very helpful and one plausible scenario when this product would be least helpful. Each scenario could be approximately one paragraph. You are encouraged to use the HCI concepts presented in the first chapter of the book. For example, the usability goals in section 1.5.1 would be worth reviewing.

Notable design properties

Perhaps using your scenarios, describe some of the design properties that support the functions of this product. Here you will be describing how the product's design accomplishes the user tasks. Create a list of 3 to 5 properties and discuss them with a few sentences each. Review the design principles in section 1.6 to help you describe these properties.

Submission

Submit a softcopy in a common format (e.g. Word, HTML, PDF) of your document using Course Online submission.

Grading

For course assignments, I expect high-quality, professional reports. It is up to you to properly compose and format the report so that it is easily readable and allows the reader to quickly find essential components.

I will use this grading sheet to help me review the project.
